About Plug Solar NZ

Plug Solar NZ follows one question until it has a yes: when can a New Zealander buy a small solar kit, put it on the deck or balcony and plug it into the wall? We track every step from the 2012 ban to the first legal sale, each with the document it comes from and the date we read it, and we keep a payback calculator for eight cities and a list of the kits sold where they are already legal.

We started it in October 2026, when the government had agreed to legalise plug-in solar but nobody had put the steps, the dates and the numbers in one place. We check the Ministry for Regulation, the Electricity Authority, the Beehive, Standards New Zealand and the parties every week, and change a page the day something moves.

We are independent. We aren't part of the government, WorkSafe, the Electricity Authority, EECA or any party, and no solar company pays for what we write. We aren't electricians or financial advisers either: the calculator is an estimate from the assumptions it shows, and anything about wiring belongs with the standard, the maker's instructions and a registered electrician.

How we work

Every figure on this site comes from a source we link to: the maker, the regulator, the government or published research or reviews. We check pages regularly, and each page shows the date it was last updated. If you spot something wrong or out of date, email [email protected] and we'll fix it.

We don't accept payment to change what we say about a product, and we never claim to have tested something we haven't.
